Working as part of a collaborative and innovative research team, you will use your expertise in ancient languages such as Coptic, Syriac, or Middle Persian to analyse a range of historical sources on the subject of ‘Domestic Slavery and Sexual Exploitation in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages’.

Your findings will contribute to major academic outputs, including journal articles, an academic monograph, and a sourcebook, ensuring significant impact on the field of late antique studies.
‘Domestic Slavery and Sexual Exploitation in the Households of Europe, North Africa, and the Near East, from Constantine to c. AD 900 / AH 287’ (DoSSE Project) is a large-scale comparative research project that investigates the presence of enslaved people within the home, their sexual use and exploitation by the free, and the wider social implications of this practice in the late Roman Empire and in its early medieval heirs.
